Rhine River Cruise with Avalon: Switzerland to Amsterdam, the Easy Way

Avalon Panorama

If you’re considering a Rhine River cruise but wondering whether it will truly deliver on comfort, variety and genuine enjoyment — let me share my experience sailing from Switzerland to Amsterdam with Avalon Waterways.

This was a journey that combined ease, excellent food, beautiful destinations and just the right balance of activity and relaxation. I travelled solo — and it worked beautifully.

The Itinerary: A Seamless Journey Through Four Countries

We began in Basel, Switzerland, before cruising north through France, Germany and the Netherlands. One of the real strengths of this itinerary is its variety. You’re not just sailing — you’re stepping into distinct regions, each with its own character.

Breisach & the Black Forest offered traditional farmhouses and forest landscapes that feel wonderfully authentic.

Strasbourg blended French and German heritage with half-timbered houses and canals that are easy to explore on foot.

Heidelberg delivered sweeping views from its castle ruins above the Neckar Valley.

Heidelberg Castle

The Rhine Gorge was the showstopper — castles, vineyards and dramatic hillsides unfolding at a perfectly unhurried pace.

Cologne added energy and Gothic grandeur.

And arriving into Amsterdam by water felt like the perfect, gentle finale — I highly recommend the canal cruise.

Each day flowed naturally. You wake somewhere new, explore at a comfortable pace, and return to your floating hotel without ever repacking a suitcase.

Excursions: Choice Without Pressure

One of the things I value most — and that many of my clients ask about — is flexibility.

Each day there were multiple excursion options: classic sightseeing, more active choices, and often something a little different for those wanting a deeper dive. You can tailor the experience to suit your interests and energy levels.

Prefer a slower morning onboard? That’s completely fine. Want to join a guided walk or cycling excursion? Easy.

There’s no rigid structure. It’s organised — but never forced.

Yes, There Are Bikes Onboard

Avalon carries bikes onboard, which adds another dimension to the journey. Guests can join guided cycling tours or head out independently when the schedule allows.

It’s a fantastic way to explore riverside paths, vineyards and smaller towns at your own pace. Combined with walking tours and active excursion options, this cruise suits travellers who like a bit of movement — not just sightseeing from a coach.

Avalon’s Panorama Suites – A Genuine Point of Difference

One of Avalon’s most distinctive features is the Panorama Suite design — and it’s more than just clever marketing.

Unlike traditional river cruise cabins with a small French balcony, Avalon’s entire wall of windows slides open, effectively turning your suite into the balcony.

The beds face the window. So you wake up looking directly at castles, vineyards and river towns drifting past.

The suites feel noticeably spacious, with proper seating, good storage and well-designed bathrooms. On scenic days — particularly through the Rhine Gorge — I found myself happily spending time in the suite, completely immersed in the view without needing to stand on deck the entire time.

If cabin comfort and space are high priorities for you, this design is a real advantage when comparing river cruise lines.

The Onboard Atmosphere & Dining

The atmosphere onboard is relaxed rather than formal. No stuffiness. No rigid dress codes. Just polished, friendly service.

As a solo traveller, I appreciated being able to choose between dining quietly or joining others. Conversations flowed easily, and the crew quickly learned names and preferences.

And the meals? Thoroughly enjoyable.

Breakfast and lunch offered generous variety, including lighter options and regional dishes. Dinners were well-paced and beautifully presented, with quality wines included. After full days exploring, it was exactly what you want — good food, good company and no decisions to make.

Dietary requirements are easily accommodated when advised in advance.

Why It Works — Especially for Solo Travellers

River cruising removes the logistical stress of independent European travel. You unpack once. Transfers, excursions and meals are handled. Each day feels structured but not rushed.

I never once felt out of place travelling solo. There was always the option to connect — but never pressure to do so.

For couples, it’s equally appealing. The pace is comfortable, the scenery constant, and the experience feels balanced.

When to Travel

I travelled in September and found it ideal — crisp mornings, warm afternoons and beautiful golden light across the vineyards. Spring and early summer are also excellent, while late-season sailings bring fewer crowds and a softer atmosphere.

Final Thoughts

An Avalon Rhine River Cruise is not about ticking off landmarks at speed. It’s about experiencing Europe comfortably and thoughtfully.

You have:

  • A diverse, well-paced itinerary
  • Multiple excursion choices each day
  • Active options including cycling
  • Consistently good dining
  • Spacious, light-filled Panorama Suites
  • Time to relax and simply watch the world drift by

If you’re looking for a European journey that combines comfort, culture and genuine ease — whether travelling solo or as a couple — this itinerary from Switzerland to Amsterdam is well worth considering.

If you’d like to talk through whether this cruise suits you, or how it compares with other Rhine options, I’m always happy to offer honest advice.
