Asia: Experiencing Thailand, Vietnam, Japan & Indonesia in a New Way

There’s something quietly powerful about travelling through Asia—not in a rushed, packed-itinerary kind of way, but slowly, with space to breathe and take it all in. It’s not always the big, dramatic sights that stay with you. Often, it’s the way the light falls across a quiet courtyard, the layers of scent from a nearby food stall, or the stillness of a temple just moments from a busy street.

Bangkok

In Thailand, it’s easy to feel the rhythm of daily life unfolding around you. Bangkok might seem chaotic at first glance, but walk a little further and you’ll find your pace. The early morning buzz of the markets, the precision of a beautifully prepared dish, the ornate calm of temple interiors—it all speaks to a culture that holds tradition and warmth side by side. Outside the cities, Thailand offers incredible contrast—serene coastlines, lush jungles, and golden sunsets that seem to last a little longer when you’re truly present.

Vietnam, too, rewards slow discovery. Cities like Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City pulse with movement, but there’s always a moment of quiet waiting nearby. You might find it over a strong local coffee in a tucked-away café or in the gentle sway of a boat gliding through Ha Long Bay, limestone cliffs drifting in and out of the morning mist. The food here tells stories—rich with history and layered flavour—and even the simplest dish invites you to pause and savour.

Halong Bay

In Japan, daily life is deeply rooted in ritual, and even ordinary experiences carry a kind of grace. There’s the elegance of a tea ceremony, the hush of a shrine nestled between modern buildings, the seasonal attention to detail in every meal. Whether you’re walking beneath cherry blossoms in Kyoto, browsing a quiet market in Kanazawa, or stepping into a centuries-old bathhouse, Japan invites you to slow down, observe, and connect—with the place, the people, and yourself.

And then there’s Indonesia—a country made up of thousands of islands, each with its own rhythm. From the spiritual energy of Bali to the peaceful beaches of Lombok or the cultural richness of Java, Indonesia blends nature, tradition, and soul-stirring beauty. The air is thick with spice, salt, and warm sea breezes. It’s a place that encourages stillness and presence.

Indonesia

What ties all of this together—what makes it not just beautiful, but truly memorable—is how you experience it. That’s why I believe small-ship cruising is one of the best ways to explore Asia. I had the opportunity to sail with Windstar on a journey from Singapore through to Indonesia, and it truly changed the way I think about travel in this part of the world. We loved the comforts of being onboard—a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere where everything is taken care of—but even more than that, we loved the ports we visited, the generous time we had in each place, and the genuine friendships we formed with other travellers. It didn’t feel rushed or touristy; it felt personal.

With Windstar’s smaller ships, you’re not lost in the crowd. You’re able to step ashore without queues, discover places at your own pace, and return to a ship that feels more like a boutique hotel than a floating resort. Staff remember your name, your preferences, and how you like to travel—so you feel both looked after and free.

If you’ve been thinking about exploring Asia in a way that’s less about checking off a list and more about meaningful moments, this is a beautiful place to start. And if you’d like to talk through the options or just see what might suit you best, I’m always here to help.
