Imagine stepping onto the deck of the Paul Gauguin and feeling the gentle sway of the ocean. As we set sail through the Society Islands, I was reminded of why I love travelling — it’s not just about where you go, but how it makes you feel. French Polynesia offers not just beauty, but a kind of serene magic that stays with you long after you’ve returned home.
Arriving in Papeete is a treat in itself. Whether you choose to stay along the coast at a sprawling resort or in the heart of the town, there's so much to explore. The bustling local market is a sensory delight — the vibrant colours of tropical fruits, the aromatic spices, and the lively chatter create an atmosphere that's both welcoming and invigorating. It's a place where each stall tells a story, a tapestry of the island's rich history and culture.
For us, the true highlight of Papeete was the evening dining experience. Picture this: the sun setting over the harbour, the warm air filled with mouth-watering aromas from the local food trucks, known as "les roulottes." This is where the locals come together to eat and socialise, and it’s here that you can truly taste the heart of the island.
Gathered around a shared table, we sampled dishes that were both familiar and exotic — fresh seafood grilled to perfection, fragrant curries, and sweet local desserts. The clink of cutlery, the laughter of friends and strangers alike, and the delightful mix of flavours made this dining experience unforgettable. It's these moments, sharing meals under the stars, that create lasting memories and connect you to a place in a way no guidebook ever could.
Our journey took us to Huahine, a place where time seems to slow down, inviting you to truly savour each moment. It’s the kind of island that sparks daydreams — lush landscapes, friendly locals, and a sense of untouched beauty. We wandered through its quiet streets, discovering small shops filled with handcrafted treasures. Each interaction, each moment spent in those shops, offered a deeper connection to the island’s culture and its people.
Taha’a was another highlight, where a day on a private island offered pure relaxation. The inviting aromas of a beach BBQ, the laughter shared with fellow travellers, and the gentle lap of the waves created a backdrop for meaningful moments. It was a day where everything felt perfectly in tune — the warmth of the sun, the cool of the water, the joy of simply being present.
Bora Bora is every bit as stunning as the pictures suggest. The lagoon here is a kaleidoscope of blues and greens, so vivid you have to pinch yourself to believe it’s real. Our day at the private beach was pure bliss. With the sun overhead and the tranquil waters stretching out before us, it was a perfect spot to unwind and soak in the breathtaking scenery. It was a place where time seemed to stand still, offering a rare chance to simply be in the moment.
Back on the ship, life was a lovely blend of comfort and understated elegance. The staterooms were a peaceful retreat, a perfect spot to unwind with a book or simply gaze out at the ocean. Dining onboard was a highlight — fresh, local ingredients transformed into meals that celebrated the flavours of the region. Whether it was breakfast as the sun rose or a candlelit dinner under the stars, each meal was a moment to savour.
What made the cruise truly special were the cultural connections. Les Gauguines and Les Gauguins brought Polynesian culture to life with their music and stories — not in a scripted way, but with a genuine warmth that made you feel part of their world.
For those seeking a journey that’s about more than just ticking off destinations, this cruise offers a chance to connect deeply with both the environment and the people you meet along the way. It’s a reminder that travel is about moments — the awe of a stunning lagoon, the joy of a shared laugh, the peace of being at sea.
If you're dreaming of an adventure that offers both breathtaking landscapes and authentic experiences, consider setting sail with Paul Gauguin. It’s not just about where you go, but how each place makes you feel, and the memories you carry long after you’ve left.
